Blind Galaxy Game Prometheus

Bernhard Schmidt is in the game, along with 28 others. I redid the galaxy creation code to allow handicapping. Basically instead of assigning players to a slot as I had in the past, I assigned a fudge factor to each of them and the code adjusted homeworld proximities and weighted system masses to comply. A secondary feature of the new code is variable homeworld spacing- "better" players are allowed to be closer to each other than worse ones (better player's homeworlds are placed first, so in reality what happens is that better players are not adjacent to each other, but if they are, they can be very close).

Handicap values are non-linear on this chart- the 0 to 2 gap is more than the 3 to 5 gap. In retrospect, Naboo (The) and EmeraldKnights both should have had a 1 instead of the 0 and 2 respectively. Players with 2's were Hall of Fame players. 3's and 4's were known players. 5 were newbies.

Galactic population peaked on turn 56 at 158,819.66. Inhabited worlds peaked at 470 on turns 55, 56, 63 and 64.

Diplomatic Traffic

Over the course of the entire game, Koridan_Empire and CityState are the clear winners, having been the sender or recipient of 3401 and 3354 messages respectively. The other empires were much less active:

GM Notes

The new Handicapping code was written just for this game.

Early expansion happens as one might expect. Some speculation abounds that Tribes_of_Man is Bernhard (they are not). Also, Koridan_Empire manages to match Tom for traffic volume!

Cyborgs die early on.

Esquimaux and Pokemon die not too much later.

Several good slots go into NPC state (and wouldn't you know it, no one notices early on). Salex (Cancel) being one. Figuring their position is salvageable, I change their name to PeaceMakers and take a Xenophobic but otherwise less hostile stance. One of the diplomatic contacts and a player's response to a third party-
"Keep out of our space and no harm will come to you"...
Direct and to the point, if not very polite! Actually, I kinda like it!!

Early teens- CityState misreads comments from Zorg that Zorg feels hemmed in due to having agreements with all but CityState as an allusion that Zorg is preparing to attack CityState... In fact, Zorg is preparing to cancel all agreements which he does in the turn 14/15 gap.

Other turn 14 news- I put a notice in the reports of "Looks like shades of World War I". This was intended to refer to the similarity towards what was happening in the game and the mobilization that occurred at the start of WWI (as in people misreading events, hitting the WAR button, and gearing up for a war that wasn't really going to happen).

One of the interesting quotes around turn 15-
[Player] is a diplomat. His modus operandi is to keep scratching your belly until you fall asleep, then bash your head in. He'll do anything he can to make you think he's on your side. I envy that ability of his.

Turn 16- a preemptive(?) strike by Tsalia against Zorg takes out the Zorg homeworld. ...Maybe Zorg's treaty cancelation wasn't a smart move...

Turn 17-19 sees a general buildup for what appears to be a near galactic-wide war. EmeraldKnights and The attempt to rally around what is left of Zorg, while CityState, KE, Tsalia, and several others prepare to steam-roller Zorg, The, EmeraldKnights and several other powers. Strangely enough, none of the NPCs has suffered an attack (maybe it is the high techs that they have???).

Early 20's see EmeraldKnights crushed, but not killed off.

A map (circa turn 22) by Behemoth of the galaxy.

Early 20's- CityState starts pushing the "Group of Seven" to attempt a 51 turn Blitz of the Galaxy.

A comment about Koridan_Empire by CityState:

If it weren't for you and your efforts in the political arena, intelligence gathering, and in providing flak, NONE of the wars fought thus far would have fared as well as they did; in fact, Tsalia probably owes his hw to you, for without your drones he surely would have lost it! The possibility of blitzing Prometheus is due solely to YOU...

Speculation by CityState about who is who in Prometheus, circa turn 23-

Empire Player GM Comment

Turn 24 - an attack by CityState and company is launched against Behemoth.

Pre turn 25 email traffic puts the plans for the Group of Seven's conquest of the galaxy into place.

Pre turn 26 email sees a probably fatal error by CityState- the timetable for the Group of Seven's attacks are sent to a member of the other side... This gaffe changed the fate of the galaxy, as the Group of Seven had enough of the good players to make a run at it and had The soon enough on the timetable that their chances of survival were pretty low.). Tom's boo-boo earns him the anti-Bernhard Award for the worst move of the game. Note: This "award" is also known as the Tom Dodd award.

Pre turn 27 sees the formation of a possible counter alliance by the targets of the CityState missive. Thankfully(?) the whole plan wasn't leaked...

t27: KE probes Pyrrans domain
      cS fleet arrives 490

t28: Valar/Tsalia/cS/OR attack Pyrrans
      KE provides drones support

t29: Sykather/Outer_Rim attack The

t30: Moose/Koridan_Empire/CityState attack Hackers
[due to the extreme distances for cS/KE forces,
this attack date may need to be set back to t31]

Military units deemed no longer needed for use
against Pyrrans, will begin transition to war
      with The

Turn 27- no one seems to see the full level of the gathering storm between the Gang of Seven (aka FOE aka Forces of Evil) and the newly created Side of Light (SOL).

Pyrrans suffer a major (?) setback when their staging point is used by Gang of Seven members as a staging point of their own. Pyrrans' fleet loses the battle.

Pyrrans Note: I scouted this planet the turn before, and guessed that the gathering fleets from several different races could only be trouble. I had had word from Hackers about the GoS alliance. I decided to preemptively attack this fleet since I determined that I could wipe it out with relatively little loss. Unbeknownst to me, several groups of the enemy fleet would arrive the same turn I attacked. Thus I ended up losing the battle rather badly. KE's guess (below) was correct!

Signs that Koridan_Empire is starting to catch on to their plan having been leaked:

Subject: Prometheus: Forwarded message from Koridan_Empire

ALL HAIL THE ALLIANCE! Greetings Bull and CityState!

> Hackers or Pyrrans, it really doesn't matter, both come under the gun in
> the turn or two; in P's case, his warfleet was destroyed by "accident" when
> he and everyone else used the same planet to stage their forces! heh heh
> heh...dats kinda funny!

I thought it was a bit sinister actually - as if Pyrrans was turning up to wipe the fleet scheduled for his own invasion. He also happened to set me to war this turn, which was a shame because that was when the probes landed!

BOB CAROLGEES - Minister

Turn 28 sees a fairly good preemptive strike by SoL against FoE (aka the "Gang of Seven"). Loud complaints come from CityState, including a series of humorous complaints about unconfirmed rumors (well, I'd consider the CityState misforward enough proof...). CityState (among others) seems puzzled by The's diplomacy. While The doesn't hide the fact that there are three people behind the wheel, most players don't quite belive it, thinking that someone is playing multiple roles.

Tribes of Man's guesses for who is who-
Sykather = Bernhard (no)
Hackers = Rolf (yes)
The = Alexander (sort of)

Early to mid 30's see the Group of Seven gutted by SoL. By turn 39, only Koridan_Empire remains a viable empire (they were one of the first to go, but managed to sue for peace and regrow).

CityState did find out of his gafe, and dissolved the group, but by then they were all on the losing side of the wars (as above).

Turn 40/41- SoL members start to try and figure out what to do, as they all have realized that FoE is defeated. The PeaceMakers/Atreis/Aegyptians war grinds to a halt for no apparent reason.

Turn 42 timeframe- Tribes_of_Man starts collecting assistance for the upcoming showdown with the leader The.

Turns 43 and 44 show little activity (other than a massive tech buildup)- fewer than a score of battles each turn, and no bombings at all.

Turns 45 to 47 are boring too. CityState becomes extinct.

Turn 48 has a Koridan_Empire scout much (perhaps all) of the galaxy. Also the Tribes_of_Man step up their plans to take out the clear and present danger that The represents. Both ToM and KE start talking to other players (including a few attempts to find NPC's). A number of large ships seem to be under construction, ranging from the mass 600 one that Jerter has nearly done, to 1111.11 and 1500 ones being build by The and Atreis (!).

Most of the early to mid 50's are boring. Turn 52 sees Jerter destroyed by KE. Turn 55, B launches a probe wave and Tribes of Man exits from its 4 turn civil war. Turn 55 or so, KE, EK and Pyrrans decide that the The problem has to be stopped, and begin preparations for War.

Turn 57- The launches a major galaxywide attack. Behemoth is obliterated (other than 80 probes still in transit). Tribes_Of_Man and Hackers are badly injured. The lesser powers of Pyrrans and Atreis are also badly wounded. PeaceMakers flub their attack on 240, blowing up the defensive units, but neglecting to bomb the system.

                Bombing Summary

Emerald Knights and Koridan Empire attempt to rally the troops for a counter attack. Behemoth of the League of Non-Aligned Worlds withdraws from the League and provides its scouting data to all (including The, just so everyone knows what I am up to.).

Turn 58- The's attacks continue, removing the last systems of Tribes_Of_Man and Atreis. Hackers loose 2/3rd's of their size, dropping under 10k. PeaceMakers take light losses. PeaceMakers, KE and Hackers bomb nearly 40 The systems and 8k pop. EK declares war on The. The GM predicts the game will be over by turn 64 at the latest.

Turn 59- 110 systems go down, mostly not those belonging to The. 26 non-The populated systems remain, 11 for EK, 6 for Hackers, 5 for KE, 3 for Pyrrans, and one for PeaceMakers. Turn 60 is looking like the turn that everyone will lose anything not in hyperspace.

Turn 60- A joint assault on The's homeworld nearly manages to level it. Had a slightly smaller force gone, the intercept of The's mass 1111.11 "Safe" ship would have failed to follow the attackers to 219. The forces against The are reduced to a handful of systems.

Turn 61- Second time is the charm, 219 goes up in smoke! No species other than The has remaining population centers however.

Turn 62- The last non The colonist dies. KE and EK flee into hyperspace, leaving PeaceMakers as the only one "out".

Turn 63- KE, EK and PeaceMakers lose their last units.

Turn 64- The game ends, as all non-The species become officially extinct.

As to who the power behind The Force was-
Jabba the Hutt, Trade Minister and leader of the IMO - Alexander Feeß
'Q' Minister of Material Logistic - Roman Radykewicz
Sebulba, Minister of War and Defense - Viola Schmidt

Last, but certainly not least, this represents the first game where Bernhard started the game, but didn't survive until the end!. I will conceed that I did "adjust" the systems nearby somewhat...

Based upon discussions with Bernhard Schmidt, Tom Dodd, Iain B, John Kehrbaum and snooping, err, reading of the diplomatic traffic.
